Google revealed on Tuesday that Android users can now utilize AI to enhance their photos. According to Google, within Google Photos, individuals can interact with the AI by speaking or typing in everyday language to explain the edits they’d like to make.
This new tool aims to simplify the photo editing process, eliminating the need to know which specific tools to use or where to locate them within the app.
Initially, this Gemini-based capability was rolled out in August for users of the newly released Pixel 10 phones in the United States.
To begin, just tap on “Help me edit” in the editing menu and describe the changes you want. If you’re unsure how to enhance your photo, you can pick from Gemini’s suggestions or simply ask the AI to “make it better.”
The tool allows for standard edits such as adjusting brightness or removing unwanted elements, as well as more complex changes like erasing background objects or restoring old photos. Additionally, it can add imaginative AI-generated effects for a creative touch.
As you make further adjustments, Gemini can handle additional requests to help you perfect your edits.
Currently, AI-powered editing is available in English to U.S. users who are 18 years or older.
This AI capability was introduced together with support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos, which marks images created with AI. While this feature first appeared on Pixel devices, Google has now confirmed to TechCrunch that it is expanding to Android users as well.
