Robotaxis from Waymo and Zoox have become a common presence on the streets of San Francisco, and soon Uber, in collaboration with Lucid and Nuro, will join them in the city. This is exactly what San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie wants to see.

“I believe our city should serve as a proving ground for new technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare innovations, and more,” Lurie stated on Wednesday during the main session at TechCrunch Disrupt. “San Francisco has always been at the forefront, and as mayor, I intend to keep us leading and embracing these advancements.”

Lurie also expressed his satisfaction with the achievements of Waymo, the self-driving technology company under Alphabet, in the Bay Area. He emphasized, “We’re open to welcoming more companies.”

He was quick to emphasize that safety is the top priority, pointing out that autonomous vehicles are overseen at the state level. The California Department of Motor Vehicles is responsible for regulating both the testing and operation of self-driving cars. Additionally, companies wishing to provide and charge for robotaxi services must obtain approval from the California Public Utilities Commission.

While Lurie is encouraging the adoption of autonomous vehicles, some other cities are less receptive. For example, Boston has even discussed the possibility of banning self-driving cars within city limits.

“Waymo has demonstrated that its rides are safe,” he remarked, adding that the driverless taxis have drawn visitors who want to experience riding in them. “We’re optimistic that service will soon be available at the airport, allowing passengers to travel directly into the city.”

However, not everyone is on board. The Teamsters Union, for instance, has advocated for limits on autonomous trucks to safeguard employment opportunities.

Lurie, on the other hand, remains optimistic about technology and the economic growth and jobs it can generate for San Francisco.

“We have faith in what’s ahead,” he said. “San Francisco has always been the starting point for the future, and we plan to keep pushing forward.”
