Solana Co-creation: The core focus of Solana is to expand Layer 1, with Layer 2 solutions or non-essential

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko shared his views on whether Solana needs a Layer 2 solution. Yakovenko pointed out that while there are no technical barriers to prevent developers from creating Layer 2 solutions on Solana, the main goal of Solana is to synchronize the global atomic state machine as quickly as possible, reaching the speed limit allowed by physical laws.

 

In this final state, any Layer 2, sidechain or zero-knowledge proof Valadium would be an external execution environment and cannot ensure atomic combination with the Layer 1 status. Although technological innovations like sidechains, data availability verification bridges and zero-knowledge proof Valadiums are popular, they do not extend the global atomic state machine. Therefore, the question of whether Solana needs a Layer 2 solution may not be entirely applicable or important. Solana is focusing on continuing to directly expand Layer 1 and enhance single virtual machine instances on Layer 1 which might only need hardware upgrades in future.
