Vitalik and Ethereum Foundation researchers propose 5 designs to reduce the maximum block size of Ethereum
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Foundation are considering at least five ways to reduce the maximum block size of Ethereum in order to optimize the blockchain for a "rollup-centric roadmap".
Buterin and researcher Toni Wahrstätter stated that the effective block size has essentially doubled over the past 12 months, possibly due to an increasing number of Rollups using Ethereum for data processing and trends like Inscriptions. They believe that simply raising data retrieval costs to 42 may be "too blunt," while creating a separate fee market could "add too much complexity." A balanced solution might involve increasing the cost of calldata while reducing costs for certain operations, or shifting towards a model that incentivizes using calldata in EVM.
