OpenAI Refutes Musk: Benefiting Humanity with AI Does Not Necessarily Mean Open-Sourcing AGI

OpenAI Refutes Musk: Benefiting Humanity with AI Does Not Necessarily Mean Open-Sourcing AGI

2024/03/06 02:40

OpenAI responded on Tuesday to a lawsuit previously brought up by Musk. OpenAI stated that Musk launched the attack because he failed in his attempt to incorporate OpenAI under Tesla. OpenAI pointed out that building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) requires much more resources than initially thought, and both the company and Musk realized that it is necessary to build a profitable entity to obtain these resources. Further, OpenAI said both Musk and the company agree that fulfilling the original intention of its establishment - enabling everyone to benefit from AI achievements - can be achieved by building widely available AI tools for humanity's benefit, not necessarily meaning AGI has to be open-sourced. As reported earlier by Golden Finance, Tesla CEO Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco Superior Court for breach of contract. In his lawsuit, Musk claimed Altman and OpenAI violated an agreement made at the inception of this AI research company: developing technology for human benefit rather than profit-making. He alleged that recent relations between OpenAI and tech giant Microsoft have damaged the company's initial commitment towards publically accessible AGI.
