Trump releases Kennedy assassination files
U.S. President Trump announced on Tuesday materials related to the 1963 assassination of former President Kennedy, attempting to fulfill his campaign promise to make this shocking event in Texas more transparent.
That evening, the U.S. National Archives posted the first batch of electronic file copies on its website. Justice Department lawyers spent a lot of time screening these files and it is expected that over 80,000 will be released in total.
These digital files provide a window for people to understand the terrifying atmosphere surrounding US-Soviet relations shortly after the 1962 Cuban missile crisis nearly led to nuclear war.
Many documents reflect investigators' work as they tried to understand Lee Harvey Oswald's situation when he was in Soviet Union and track his activities months before Kennedy's assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Preliminary assessments of these documents have not shown any deviation from central narratives.
