Celo Developers Complete Ethereum Layer 2 Transition Nearly Two Years After Initial Proposal
Celo developers completed the Ethereum Layer 2 conversion after nearly two years of initial proposal. Originally an independent Layer 1 blockchain, it has completed its transition to the Ethereum Layer 2 network.
The formal transition on the mainnet occurred around 11pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, with the hard fork occurring at block height 31,056,500. Block production on Celo L1 stopped at that point, and the network fully transitioned to Layer 2. The core developers of the project, CLabs, first proposed the transition of Celo from Layer 1 to Layer 2 chain in July 2023.
The development of Layer 2 utilized Optimism's customizable toolkit, OP Stack. This means that Celo is now operating as an Optimistic rollup.
