Bluesky introduces private bookmarking

Bluesky introduces private bookmarking

Social platform Bluesky is introducing a highly requested feature from users—no, it's not the ability to edit posts—but rather, bookmarks.

On Monday, the company revealed this update, referring to it as Saved Posts. Users can find this feature by tapping a new bookmark symbol beneath each post, located next to the favorite heart icon.

At any moment, users can access their bookmarked posts from a new “Saved” area in the app’s primary menu.

Although both likes and bookmarks let users tag posts for future reference, bookmarks serve as a private way to save content, unlike likes which are public. On Bluesky, both your profile and its data—including your likes—are visible to everyone. This may not be ideal for all, since users sometimes want to save things privately or keep certain interests discreet.

For instance, journalists may want to save posts for research without letting others know they are investigating a topic, as making that public might attract unwanted scrutiny. Some users may simply wish to privately save posts with mature content.

On X, Elon Musk recognized that public likes could actually lower user interaction, which led the platform to make likes private last year. Employees at X pointed out that visible likes might lead to negative behaviors, with users holding back from liking certain posts to avoid damaging their image or endorsing controversial content.

Bluesky and other apps using the AT Protocol do not yet have support for private data, so likes remain public. To address this, Bluesky has arranged for bookmarks to be stored separately from the protocol for now, ensuring they remain private—much like the app’s direct messages. If the protocol eventually allows private data, this setup may be updated.

For now, this new saved posts feature can motivate users to interact more with content, while letting them keep a personal list of posts to revisit, without mixing them with every post they happen to like. It also replaces the workaround many Bluesky users have used—replying with a red pushpin emoji to mark posts—by offering a simple bookmarking option, and even includes a migration tool for those switching from the emoji method.

This launch comes shortly after another recent improvement to the Bluesky app, which added a button for uploading both photos and videos, new options for giving feedback to creators of custom feeds, and functionality to add users to a Starter Park—a collection of suggested follows that anyone can create.
