Sam Altman responds to ChatGPT erotic content controversy: OpenAI is not the "world's moral police"
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on Wednesday that the company is "not the world's elected moral police." This comes after his decision to relax ChatGPT's content restrictions, allowing content such as erotica, which has sparked strong opposition.
In recent months, this artificial intelligence startup has faced increasing scrutiny, with the public focusing on how it protects users (especially minors). In response, OpenAI has gradually improved its safety and control measures.
However, on Tuesday, Altman posted on social platform X that since the company has been able to mitigate "serious mental health risks," OpenAI can now "safely relax" most content restrictions.
Last December, Altman stated that ChatGPT would allow a wider range of content, including erotic content.
On Wednesday, Altman posted again on X, attempting to clarify this move. He said that OpenAI "takes the principle of 'treating adult users as adults' very seriously," but will still not allow "content that causes harm to others."
Altman wrote: "Just as society distinguishes other reasonable boundaries (such as R-rated movies), we hope to take a similar approach in this regard."
