The Dutch central bank governor, Olaf Sleijpen, has warned that the European Central Bank (ECB) may soon need to treat stablecoins as a serious economic risk — not just a regulatory issue. In an interview shared by Cointelegraph, he explained that dollar-pegged stablecoins are growing so fast that they could become important players inside Europe’s financial system. Sleijpen said that if these coins ever lose stability, the companies behind them might quickly sell the assets they hold as reserves. This could cause stress in financial markets, hurt the economy, and even affect inflation. He added that if stablecoins trigger big shocks, the ECB might need to adjust monetary policy, although it’s unclear whether that would mean raising or lowering interest rates. The stablecoin market has expanded sharply this year. Data from CoinGecko shows that overall stablecoin value has jumped almost 50%, reaching around $310 billion. Tether’s USDT rose from $127 billion in November 2024 to $183 billion — a 44% increase. USDC, the second-largest stablecoin, grew from $37 billion to $74 billion, effectively doubling in size. Back in April, the U.S. Treasury said that changing market conditions could speed up stablecoin adoption even more, estimating the market could reach $2 trillion by 2028. Sleijpen warned that as dollar-based stablecoins grow, their ups and downs could have a big impact on Europe’s economy. Other European officials have also expressed concern. In April, ECB board member Piero Cipollone said the rise of dollar-backed stablecoins could weaken Europe’s monetary sovereignty and supported the idea of a digital euro. Italy’s Finance Minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, argued that stablecoins may be a bigger danger to Europe’s financial system than trade tariffs. Sleijpen’s comments highlight a key worry: if major stablecoin issuers suddenly sell large amounts of their reserves, it could spread financial stress across markets, hurting liquidity, pushing down asset prices, and affecting inflation.
