What you can look forward to at OpenAI’s DevDay 2025, and ways to tune in

OpenAI is preparing to hold its third annual developer event, DevDay 2025, this Monday. According to the company, over 1,500 attendees are expected to gather at Fort Mason in San Francisco for what OpenAI calls its “largest event to date.” The day will include major announcements, keynote speeches from OpenAI leaders, and a fireside conversation between CEO Sam Altman and renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive.

Judging by the agenda, DevDay 2025 is set to showcase OpenAI’s growing influence in Silicon Valley as it competes with tech heavyweights like Apple, Google, and Meta. The company is now developing an AI device, a social platform, and an AI-driven browser aimed at challenging Chrome. This marks a significant expansion from its inaugural DevDay in 2023, when its main offerings were ChatGPT and an API for developers to access its models.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing more rivals than ever as it tries to attract developers.

Over the past year, AI models from Anthropic and Google have made significant progress in areas like coding and web development. To stay competitive, OpenAI has had to introduce more advanced models at reduced costs. At the same time, Meta has assembled a strong AI team within its new Meta Superintelligence Labs, which could soon pose another challenge for OpenAI.

During its first DevDay in 2023, OpenAI introduced the GPT-4 Turbo model, and Altman outlined his vision for an AI agent marketplace called the GPT Store. Shortly after, Altman was removed as CEO, only to return following intense negotiations over a dramatic weekend. The 2024 conference was more low-key, with the company announcing several developer-focused improvements, such as an API for AI voice apps, but few other major updates.

There are no confirmed product launches for DevDay 2025, fueling widespread speculation. OpenAI might finally reveal its much-anticipated AI browser, or provide news about the AI device being developed with Ive and ex-Apple staff. Updates to the GPT Store or new tools for building agent-based workflows could also be on the agenda.

TechCrunch will be reporting live from San Francisco, so check back here for the latest updates. Here’s a rundown of what to expect from OpenAI’s DevDay and how to tune in.

DevDay 2025 begins at 10 a.m. PT(UTC+8) on October 6 with a keynote from Altman, who will present “announcements, live demonstrations, and insights into how developers are shaping the future with AI.” The keynote is expected to last about an hour and will be streamed live on OpenAI’s YouTube channel.

This is the only session that will be available via livestream for those not attending in person.

Attendees on site will also hear from speakers including Cursor CEO Michael Truell, San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie, and Kimberly Tan, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, among others. Several OpenAI team members will present on their work, such as model behavior expert Laurentia Romaniuk and Codex lead Alexander Embiricos.

DevDay 2025 will also feature a variety of AI-driven side attractions. One highlight is “Sora Cinema,” described as a “cozy mini-theater with popcorn” showing short films created by OpenAI’s video model, Sora. Another is a phone booth with a “living portrait” of legendary computer scientist Alan Turing that can interact with visitors.

Two major events will close out DevDay later in the afternoon. These sessions won’t be livestreamed, but recordings will be uploaded to YouTube later that day.

At 3:15 p.m. PT(UTC+8), OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Olivier Godement, who leads product for the OpenAI Platform, will host a “Developer State of the Union.” They’ll demonstrate new features and discuss what’s next for developers.

Finally, at 4:15 p.m. PT(UTC+8), Altman and Ive will hold a “Closing Fireside Chat” to talk about “the art of building in the era of AI.” This conversation will last approximately 45 minutes.
