On Thursday, Spotify revealed a number of agreements with leading record companies to create new AI-driven features that prioritize fair artist compensation and put musicians and songwriters at the forefront. Working alongside Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin, Spotify stated it would build “responsible AI” solutions that honor copyright laws, while also giving artists the choice to permit or decline the use of AI technologies.

While Spotify did not provide detailed information about the functionality of these upcoming tools, the platform already includes AI-powered experiences, such as its AI DJ that curates personalized playlists and other features that let users generate playlists through AI prompts.

Spotify recently faced backlash after an AI-created band’s tracks gained widespread attention on the platform, sparking concerns about the potential marginalization of human musicians in the industry’s future.

In the previous month, Spotify updated its AI guidelines to address issues like spam, particularly from users who upload large volumes of AI-generated content, create repeated tracks, or attempt to game the search and recommendation algorithms. The company also announced plans to implement the DDEX music labeling standard to indicate when AI has contributed to the music-making process.

These forthcoming generative AI capabilities are in line with Spotify’s commitment to let artists decide if they want to use AI tools. The anticipated system is expected to enable musicians to track when their work appears in AI-generated songs and receive appropriate compensation. Over time, Spotify says this initiative will extend to include additional rights holders and distributors.

“There are some in the tech sector who argue that copyright should be eliminated. We disagree. The rights of musicians are vital. Copyright is fundamental,” Spotify stated in its announcement. “If the music industry doesn’t take the lead now, AI-driven advancements will occur elsewhere, without proper rights, approval, or payment. Alongside rights holders, artists, and songwriters, we are making major investments in AI research and product innovation,” the statement continued.

Spotify also mentioned that it has started developing a generative AI research lab and a dedicated product team, focusing on new technologies that align with its belief that artists should have control over their involvement in the AI music landscape. The company says initial work on these products is underway, with additional tools planned for the future.
