Google’s investments in carbon capture power facilities, which have shown varied results

Google announced today its plans to invest in an Illinois-based natural gas power facility designed to capture most of its carbon emissions.

This 400-megawatt plant will be constructed near Decatur, adjacent to an Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) ethanol facility that already captures carbon dioxide from its processes. Google will purchase the majority of the plant’s electricity to supply its local data centers, while ADM will utilize some of the steam and power produced. The project is being developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure.

According to Google, the company aims to capture about 90% of the carbon dioxide produced by the new plant.

The CO2 from Google’s facility will be stored in the same underground formations currently used by ADM’s ethanol operation. This location is home to the nation’s first long-term carbon storage well.

On average, roughly 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide are injected into the well each day. However, in 2024, injections were paused after salty brine containing dissolved CO2 was discovered to have moved into unauthorized areas, according to the EPA. ADM attributed the issue to corrosion at a monitoring well, as reported by E&E News, and has since resumed injections.

Although carbon capture and storage (CCS) holds significant potential for lowering emissions from coal and gas power plants, its effectiveness in practice has been inconsistent.

A recent analysis of 13 CCS sites, which account for 55% of all captured carbon, found that most are underperforming. For example, an ExxonMobil facility in Wyoming that processes natural gas has captured 36% less CO2 than projected. Similarly, a comparable 115-megawatt plant in Canada has only achieved about half of its promised capture rate.

When successful, CCS can help reduce pollution from burning natural gas for electricity, but it does not address methane leaks that occur throughout the natural gas supply chain. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, causing 84 times more warming over two decades than carbon dioxide.

Consequently, even small leaks can have a major impact on carbon calculations. If just 2% of methane escapes, burning natural gas without controls is as harmful as coal. While capturing carbon helps lower emissions, it cannot fully offset the warming caused by extracting and transporting natural gas.
