Spotify Eases Video Podcast Monetization Requirements

Spotify has announced more accessible criteria for podcasters aiming to earn revenue from their video content. Now, creators only need to have released three episodes, accumulated 2,000 hours of listener engagement, and attracted 1,000 active viewers within the past month to qualify for monetization.

Previously, joining Spotify’s video partner program required podcasters to publish at least 12 episodes, reach 10,000 hours of audience consumption, and have 2,000 unique listeners in the last 30 days.

How Podcasters Earn

Eligible creators are compensated based on the number of premium subscribers who watch their videos, in addition to receiving a portion of ad revenue generated from free-tier listeners.

New Sponsorship Tools for Creators

Spotify is rolling out enhanced sponsorship features, enabling podcasters to manage, schedule, and track host-read ad placements in their video content. These updates will be available in April through both the Spotify for Creators app and Megaphone, Spotify’s podcast management and monetization platform.

Expanding Video Podcasting Capabilities

In an effort to rival YouTube, Spotify is introducing a new API that allows creators to upload and monetize video podcasts directly from their preferred platforms. At launch, services such as Acast, Audioboom, Libsyn, Omny, and Podigee are already integrated with this API.

Growth in Video Podcast Consumption

These initiatives come as Spotify seeks new ways to attract listeners and boost its subscription revenue. Since the partner program’s debut, video podcast viewership on Spotify has nearly doubled, with the average user now watching twice as many video shows per month compared to before the program’s introduction.

However, this surge may be partly due to Spotify promoting more video content within its app.

New Studio Opens in West Hollywood

Spotify is also launching a new studio in West Hollywood dedicated to podcast and video production. This facility will serve as the headquarters for the Ringer podcast network and will be accessible to select members of the partner program. The company already operates studios in Los Angeles’ arts district, New York, Stockholm, and London.
