Foreign Exchange Options Surge at CME in 2025 as Broader FX Market Remains Flat
CME Group Achieves Record Trading Volumes in 2025
In 2025, CME Group reached an all-time high in annual trading activity, handling 28.1 million contracts. Notably, foreign exchange options stood out as a strong performer, even as overall FX trading remained largely unchanged. The exchange's forex options segment experienced impressive growth, increasing by 19% to an average of 53,000 contracts traded daily. Meanwhile, the total average daily volume for all foreign exchange products held steady at 980,000 contracts throughout the year.
While the overall FX market at CME saw little change compared to the previous year—slipping slightly from the prior average of 1 million contracts per day—demand for options surged. This uptick reflected traders' heightened interest in risk management tools during a period of market uncertainty.
