OpenAI is preparing to hold its third annual developer conference, DevDay 2025, this Monday. The company has announced that over 1,500 attendees will gather at Fort Mason in San Francisco for what it calls its “largest event to date.” The day will include major announcements, keynote speeches from OpenAI leaders, and a fireside discussion between CEO Sam Altman and renowned Apple designer Jony Ive.

Judging by the agenda, DevDay 2025 is set to showcase OpenAI’s growing influence in Silicon Valley, positioning itself alongside tech giants like Apple, Google, and Meta. OpenAI is currently developing an AI device, a social networking platform, and an AI-driven browser intended to rival Chrome. This marks a significant expansion from its inaugural DevDay in 2023, when its primary offerings were ChatGPT and an API for developers to access its models.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing unprecedented competition as it seeks to attract developers.

Over the past year, AI models from Anthropic and Google have made significant strides in areas like coding assistance and web development. To keep pace, OpenAI has had to introduce more advanced models at reduced costs. In the background, Meta has assembled a formidable AI team within its new Meta Superintelligence Labs, which could soon pose another challenge for OpenAI.

During its first DevDay in 2023, OpenAI introduced a new AI model, GPT-4 Turbo, and Altman outlined his vision for an AI agent marketplace called the GPT Store. Shortly after, Altman was removed as CEO, only to return following intense negotiations over a dramatic weekend. The 2024 conference was more low-key, with the company revealing notable developer enhancements, such as an API for AI voice applications, but little else.

There are no confirmed product launches for DevDay 2025, fueling widespread speculation. OpenAI might finally debut its long-anticipated AI browser or provide updates on the AI hardware project being developed with Ive and former Apple staff. There could also be news about the GPT Store, which has seen little public discussion since its initial release years ago.

TechCrunch will be reporting live from San Francisco, so stay tuned here for the latest updates. Here’s what you should know about OpenAI’s DevDay and how to tune in.

DevDay 2025 begins at 10am PT on October 6 with an opening keynote by Altman, who will present “announcements, live demonstrations, and a vision for how developers are shaping the future with AI.” The keynote is expected to last about an hour and will be broadcast live on OpenAI’s YouTube channel.

This is the only session that will be streamed live for those attending remotely.

Attendees on site can look forward to presentations and talks from speakers such as Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and Andreessen Horowitz Investing Partner Kimberly Tan, among others. Several OpenAI team members will also discuss their work, including model behavior researcher Laurentia Romaniuk and Codex lead Alexander Embiricos.

DevDay 2025 will also feature a variety of AI-powered side attractions. One highlight is “Sora Cinema,” described as a “comfortable mini-theater with popcorn” that will showcase short films made using OpenAI’s video model, Sora. Another attraction is a phone booth featuring a “living portrait” of legendary computer scientist Alan Turing that can interact with visitors.

Later in the day, two major events will bring DevDay to a close. These sessions won’t be streamed live, but recordings will be uploaded to YouTube afterward.

At 3:15 pm PT, OpenAI President Greg Brockman and Olivier Godement, head of product for the OpenAI Platform, will host a “Developer State of the Union.” They plan to demonstrate new features and discuss what’s next for developers.

Finally, at 4:15 pm PT, Altman and Ive will participate in a “Closing Fireside Chat” to explore the “art of creation in the era of AI.” This conversation is expected to last about 45 minutes.
