German retail sales in 2025 are projected to increase by 2.4% in real terms compared to the prior year
German Retail Sales Show Moderate Growth in 2025
Data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reveals that retail sales in Germany rose by 2.4% in real terms, accounting for inflation, and by 3.6% in nominal terms, without inflation adjustment, when comparing 2025 to the previous year.
During the first half of 2025, real retail sales experienced a notable jump of 3.8% over the same period in 2024. However, this momentum eased in the latter half of the year, with growth slowing to 1.1%.
The strong performance in the early months of 2025 was partly driven by a unique event: the restructuring of a major online and mail-order retailer in August 2024, which contributed to the temporary surge in sales figures.
