December CPI Report: Inflation Expected to Edge Up

Projections for December's Consumer Price Index suggest a modest increase in inflation, primarily attributed to higher prices for goods. Following a cooler-than-anticipated reading in November, economists anticipate that inflation picked up pace last month, largely due to persistent tariff effects. These pressures are forecasted to ease during the latter part of 2026.

Gregory Daco, chief US economist at EY-Parthenon, notes, "Inflation is likely to climb gradually in early 2026, but a significant spike is unlikely." On average, experts estimate that headline inflation advanced by 0.3% from November to December, with an annual rate of 2.6%.
