Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi could announce an early election, according to her coalition ally
Speculation Grows Over Possible Early Election in Japan
On Sunday, Hirofumi Yoshimura, who leads the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), indicated that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi might move to dissolve parliament and hold a snap general election. This follows reports suggesting that Takaichi is weighing the possibility of a nationwide vote as early as February.
Since becoming Japan's first female prime minister in October, Takaichi has maintained high public approval ratings. Political analysts believe that calling an early election could help her capitalize on this popularity. Her firm approach toward China has resonated with conservative voters, but it has also led to heightened diplomatic tensions with Beijing.
