Corn Slips on Tuesday After Modest Gains Monday

Corn Futures Experience Modest Declines at Midday

By midday on Tuesday, corn futures had slipped between 1 and 3 cents, continuing the downward momentum seen at the start of the week. The CmdtyView national average cash price for corn dropped by 1.5 cents, settling at $3.82 1/2.

USDA Reports Highlight Increased Yields and Production

The latest Crop Production report from the USDA, released on Monday, indicated that the average corn yield in the US reached 186.5 bushels per acre, a slight uptick of 0.5 bushels compared to November’s figures. Harvested acreage also expanded by 1.3 million acres, totaling 91.3 million acres. As a result, total corn production climbed to 17.021 billion bushels, an increase of 269 million bushels from the previous month. The quarterly Grain Stocks report recorded corn stocks as of December 1 at 13.282 billion bushels, which is 1.207 billion bushels higher than the same time last year.

WASDE Report and Global Stock Changes

The latest WASDE update revealed that US ending stocks were revised upward by 198 million bushels, now projected at 2.227 billion bushels. This adjustment was driven by higher production, a 19 million bushel increase in carryover from the 2024/25 season, and a 100 million bushel rise in feed usage. On the global stage, ending stocks increased by 11.76 million metric tons to reach 290.91 million metric tons, with notable gains from both the US and a 6.24 million metric ton boost in Chinese corn production.

International Corn Purchases

Overnight, South Korean buyers secured 264,000 metric tons of corn through tenders, and an additional tender for 140,000 metric tons is set to close on Wednesday.
