US existing home sales finish 2025 on a high note, with prices continuing to decline
December Sees Surge in Existing Home Sales
In December, the number of previously owned homes sold climbed to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.35 million, marking a 5.1% rise from the previous month, as reported by the National Association of Realtors. This growth surpassed analysts’ forecasts, which anticipated only a 2% increase. Compared to the same period last year, sales were up by 1.4%.
Throughout the entire year, a total of 4.06 million existing homes changed hands, matching the figure recorded in 2024. When accounting for seasonal trends, December’s sales reached their highest level in almost three years.
All regions experienced month-over-month growth in sales. On an annual basis, the Northeast and Midwest posted gains, while the South and West saw declines.
