The History of Prohibition in the United States
On this date in 1919, the United States ratified Prohibition, marking a significant moment in the nation’s legislative history. The law officially took effect on January 17, 1920, and remained in place until late 1933, resulting in nearly fourteen years during which the manufacture, import, transport, and sale of alcoholic beverages were outlawed nationwide under the 18th Amendment.
Despite these strict regulations, Americans continued to find ways to consume alcohol. A vast underground network of bootleggers and smugglers emerged, ensuring that the demand for spirits was still met, even if it was done in secret.
