The peso ley replaced the peso moneda nacional in 1970, followed by the peso argentino in 1983, and the austral in 1985. By 2023, the situation had further deteriorated, with the official exchange rate reaching 350 pesos to the dollar, and over 720 pesos on unregulated markets. As of January 2024, the official exchange rate was approximately 800 pesos to 1 USD. This rapid devaluation and the wide gap between official and unofficial exchange rates reflect the peso's instability.
