Square automatically enables bitcoin payment for millions of US merchants
Square has begun automatically enabling Bitcoin payment functionality for millions of eligible merchants in the United States. When transactions are settled, they are automatically converted to US dollars, with no processing fees, and this policy will remain in effect until 2026. This feature defaults to dollar settlement, allowing merchants to avoid Bitcoin price volatility and custody issues, and is directly integrated into the existing Square payment system. Industry figures such as Lightspark CEO David Marcus believe this move could drive Bitcoin to become a financial infrastructure standard akin to TCP/IP.
