Important Tax Deadlines to Remember

Tax Day is approaching, and if you tend to work best under pressure, make sure to note these key dates on your calendar.

2026 Tax Filing Deadline

For most taxpayers, the deadline to submit your 2025 tax return is Wednesday, April 15, 2026. If you need additional time, you can apply for a six-month extension.

When Will You Receive Your Tax Refund?

The IRS states that if you file your taxes electronically and opt for direct deposit, you can typically expect your refund within 21 days. However, if you mail a paper return, it may take four weeks or longer to receive your refund.

Consequences of Missing the Tax Deadline

Failing to file your federal tax return on time can result in a penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax for each month your return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. If you file but don’t pay the taxes owed, or if you have an extension, the penalty is generally much lower—0.5% per month on the outstanding amount.

Exceptions to the April 15 Deadline

Some taxpayers may qualify for an extended deadline if they live or operate a business in areas impacted by disasters, or in states observing local holidays. For a full list of disaster-related deadline extensions, visit the IRS disaster relief page.

Extended Filing Deadline

If you request an extension, you have until Thursday, October 15 to file your return. Keep in mind, though, that an extension to file does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed. To avoid penalties, estimate and pay any taxes due by April 15.

1099 Form Deadline

If you’re self-employed, work as an independent contractor, or earn income outside of a traditional job, you should receive your 1099 form by February 15. Employers are generally required to send these forms by the end of January.

W-2 Form Deadline

Your employer must provide your W-2 form by January 31.

Quarterly Estimated Tax Payment Deadlines

If you receive income that isn’t subject to withholding, you’re usually required to make estimated tax payments to the IRS. These can be made quarterly or as a single annualized payment, which is due April 15.

  • First quarter payment: April 15
  • Second quarter payment: June 15
  • Third quarter payment: September 15
  • Fourth quarter payment: January 15, 2027
