Threads surpasses X in daily mobile user count, according to recent data
Threads Surpasses X in Mobile Daily Usage
According to insights from Meta’s Threads app has overtaken Elon Musk’s X in terms of daily active users on mobile platforms. While X continues to lead in web-based engagement, Threads has steadily grown its mobile user base on both iOS and Android devices over recent months.
Data from Similarweb indicates that, as of January 7, 2026, Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users on mobile, outpacing X, which recorded 125 million daily mobile users.
Long-Term Trends Drive Growth
This shift appears to be part of a broader trend rather than a direct response to recent controversies on X. Notably, X has faced backlash after reports surfaced of users leveraging its AI tool, Grok, to generate unauthorized explicit images, including those of minors. These incidents have triggered investigations, with California’s attorney general launching a probe into Grok, following similar actions in the UK, EU, India, Brazil, and other regions.
The turbulence on X has also benefited competitors, with social platform Bluesky experiencing a surge in downloads recently.
What’s Fueling Threads’ Momentum?
Threads’ rise in mobile engagement seems to be influenced by several factors:
- Promotion across Meta’s other platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, where Threads is frequently advertised to existing users
- An emphasis on supporting creators
- Rapid introduction of new features, including:
- Communities based on shared interests
- Enhanced filtering tools
- Direct messaging
- Support for long-form content
- Ephemeral posts
- Testing in-message games
Together, these enhancements have encouraged more users to make Threads a part of their daily routine on mobile devices.
Official User Numbers and Ongoing Growth
Meta reported in August 2025 that Threads had surpassed 400 million monthly active users. By October of the same year, daily active users had reached 150 million, according to the company’s statements.
Recent and Regional Trends
Threads’ upward trajectory has been consistent for several months. Last summer, Similarweb reported that Threads was rapidly closing the gap with X on mobile, achieving a 127.8% year-over-year increase by late June 2025.
Despite this, X still maintains a lead in the U.S., though the difference is shrinking. Compared to a year ago, X’s daily active user count in the U.S. has been cut in half.
Web Usage: Threads Lags Behind
While Threads excels on mobile, its web presence remains limited. X continues to attract a stable web audience, averaging around 150 million daily visits. As of January 13, X recorded 145.4 million daily web visits, whereas Threads saw just 8.5 million daily visits across Threads.com and Threads.net combined, according to Similarweb.
