In response to the energy crisis, Japan will further increase coal-fired power generation```htmlGolden Ten Data reported on March 27 that Japan will allow increased use of coal-fired power plants to strengthen its energy supply security amid energy shocks caused by the Middle East war. According to documents from a meeting held by Japan’s Ministry of Trade on Friday, the country will permit less efficient coal-fired power plants to participate in capacity market auctions in the fiscal year starting in April. Previously, these types of plants were restricted from joining capacity market auctions as part of climate change response efforts. Power generators sell electricity through the capacity market. Since the outbreak of the Iran war, Japan is joining other countries in increasing reliance on more polluting fossil fuels for power generation. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, combined with the shutdown of the world's largest liquefied natural gas facility in Qatar, has left Asian countries that heavily depend on Middle Eastern energy increasingly vulnerable. Data shows that in 2024 and the two preceding years, coal accounted for the largest share of Japan’s electricity production.```
