(1) After US President Trump stated that negotiations with Iran are progressing rapidly, European natural gas prices fell; however, uncertainty over whether the two sides can ultimately reach an agreement limited the decline. (2) Analysts at ING Group said: "The longer this situation lasts, the more likely Asian buyers will need to turn to the spot market to make up for disrupted contracted gas volumes." (3) If this happens, Europe will face fiercer competition for LNG cargoes, just as its gas storage facilities are only about 40% full—well below the five-year average of 54%. (4) Meanwhile, the current spot premium in the natural gas market (i.e., the price of near-month contracts being higher than winter contracts) offers almost no economic incentive for traders and utilities to inject additional gas into storage facilities ahead of winter. (5) In early trading, benchmark Dutch TTF natural gas futures fell by 1.8%, quoted at EUR 48.20 per megawatt hour.
